Exploring the Role of an Artist Filmmaker

In my understanding, an Artist Filmmaker is an artist who uses film as a medium for artistic creation. Compared to animation, it is more aligned with fine art. In contrast to traditional commercial films, I believe an Artist Filmmaker focuses more on personal expression and experimentation, with works often possessing a stronger artistic and independent spirit. Their creations tend to combine various media, such as installations, illustrations, photography, etc.

Before coming to study MA Character Animation, most of my work was cross-media animation and illustration. On one hand, this was because I had not received formal training in animation, so I created animations freely, without any specific rules. On the other hand, I enjoy presenting a novel artistic experience by using different media. I have experimented with installations, projections, flip books, and other forms of creative work. Among these, two animated pieces created using installations and projections are still my favorite works. Therefore, out of personal interest, I feel that the role of Artist Filmmaker suits me well.

Additionally, there is another reason: I would love to find a job in Europe. This is not only because my boyfriend, whom I’ve known for 11 years, will likely settle in Europe, but also because I really admire the REMEMBERS Studio in France. I first came across them when I saw the advertisement animation they created for Chanel between 2021 and 2022. Unlike typical commercial animations, their work feels more like “flowing illustrations,” with a strong style that perfectly matches the various luxury brand themes. Their creations are more like artworks than advertisements. Later, I fell in love with A Kind of Testament when it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short. The striking visual style and abstract artistic expression felt oddly familiar. During my research, I discovered that the creator was a member of this studio, and the work was also produced with their assistance. I believe they have achieved a perfect balance between artistry and commerciality, which makes it the ideal environment for an Artist Filmmaker.

In conclusion, being an Artist Filmmaker is my dream career. However, it does come with a fatal issue: pursuing art alone without connections, resources, financial backing, or marketing is difficult to make a living. Clearly, I am not someone who can survive solely on dreams—I have material aspirations as well. Therefore, an animation studio that provides stable income while also embracing artistic values is my best option. But the question arises: would such a studio actually need someone like me? All I can do is try my best.
